Interesting, none of those dates are ones I've bookmarked... I did bookmark 2 versions of 1968-10-20, a day earlier than one of those you listed.

(Here's the Charlie Miller upgrade:)

BTW, check out this recently added dateless gig from the merry month of May 1968:

going through these one by one...but don't know if I can get past the Live at Unknown on 1968-05-00...I really am loving this performance...the keys are turned up and it is a fine example of pigpen having his moments...I don't think I have heard that many recordings with pigpen's organ so prominent and part of the musical interplay...the rest of the band must have been looking at him wondering why he doesn't always play like that...

the st stephen is cut but what remains is very sweet...very organ based...actually the keys are prominent in just every tune...I guess the thunderbird was going down well that eve...

check it out and enjoy...

next, the other three disks of light into ashes req...

"BTW, check out this recently added dateless gig from the merry month on May 1968" -

BTW CPW, this is the same show as disc 1 of the 'unknown '68 reels' set:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd68-xx-xx.sbd.vernon.9426.sbeok.shnf
A lot of this set isn't so "unknown" - disc 2 comes from 2/15/69 and 2/3/68, and disc 3 is said to be 8/21/68 (haven't checked myself but the times & cuts match up). Disc 4 is where the real unknowns are.

so I am listening to some more of this 1968 filler or at least that is how I find it among my stuff...

anyway, the st stephens clocking in at 7:37 and 8:20 are both 68 masterpieces that must be heard...

Is there a known date for these two?

I looked at 08-22 and 08-23 and the the times of those are much shorter than 7:37...

this probably already has been discussed but both versions have a lot in common with 06-14...one reviewer even mentions that the 7:37 version sounds like a cleaner version of 06-14...I need to do the comparison but the 7:37 version does jam and fly in the same manner...the 06-14 is shown as being shorter but as noted, I haven't done any true comparison yet...

the dark star (16:07) and 8:20 st stephen will bring a big smile as well...

I do need to confirm the show that these gems are from...

Mr Tell also raves about those St Stephens, you're not alone....
But as mentioned, disc 4 of that set really is unknown - I'm not sure even what month those two excerpts are from.

As for Pigpen's playing, it seems to me he quieted or toned down in later '68. His keyboards are up-front in a lot of the early '68 Anthem shows, but at least from August, he seems more subdued (at least from what I remember). I'd guess this is due to band discussions, the others may have felt that he was holding them back or not really able to join in the jams, so he had to step back a bit. (And of course, he was kicked out for a while in October, and they got a new keyboard player in November.)
